Collage, Zine and Storytelling Workshop

Working with artist bookmaker, and zine maker Betsy delve into a world of mythical animals in Manchester. The session will develop skills in collaging, bookmaking and self-publishing. Betsy, the creator of the tiny wolves invasion in Stockholm will help you to realise your ideas creating a zine (self-published magazine) based guide for Manchester’s unknown creatures. You will create collaged images of imagined creatures, and build up their background stories. These images will be transformed into a zine including maps of the city and helpful hints as to where to find them.

Betsy began making zines during her time at Manchester School of Art, using them as a space to produce work without having to play by anyone else’s rules. During her Master’s research she started writing stories about fictitious urban animals as a way of to change the experience of walking through familiar streets and cities. In this workshop she invites you to join her in creating a new guidebook for mythical creatures in Manchester.

During the workshop you will use collage and creative writing exercises in order to make images and to create backstories for the creatures. As a group, we will then work together to write guides for how and where to find these animals, and to give tips for finding them in the city. The group will then work together to design a zine including the stories, images and information, everyone will then bind and finish their own copies.

All equipment and materials will be provided.
