Tuesday Talk: Karen Knorr

12.30pm—2pm

Karen Knorr belongs to a generation of artists influenced by the debates on the politics of representation in cultural studies and film theory in the late 1970s and early 1980s. She is well known for her distinctive early photographic work reflecting critically - and often playfully - on the privileged lifestyle and values of the English upper middle classes (Belgravia, 1979-1981; Gentlemen, 1981-1983; and Connoisseurs, 1986). Her later projects, Academies (1994-2001) and Fables (2004-2008), explored the environment and architecture of European academies and museums and the relationships among art, natural history, mythology and popular culture. Most recently, her work has been inspired by the cultural heritage of India and Japan, especially by the symbolic hierarchies and links between femininity and the animal world.

Free, no booking necessary.

The Tuesday Talks series are a collaboration between the Whitworth and Manchester School of Art.

The Tuesday Talks invite leading artists, thinkers and curators to explore the driving forces, influences and sources of inspiration within contemporary art. They take place at the Whitworth Art Gallery in the Grand Hall.
