MA Graphic Design and Art Direction

THE UNFOLDED JOURNEY OF TRANScoffinATION

I’m an Art Director, Graphic Artist and Concept Developer, creating visual inspiration for artists and designers. The core of my practice is driven by personal experiences, which becomes a concept I feel strongly about. I’m a practitioner that can use that one concept and place into multiple contexts. It can vary from gallery based, to a design context such as creating publications, which can vary from trend books to inspiration books.

The concept of my work has spurred from a personal bereavement within the last 3 years. This has lead me to use the MA as not only therapy, but a way of creating work that leaves the audience to question ideas and possibilities around the subject.

I began the MA as a practiced based researcher graphically exploring contained spaces, whilst conveying a feeling in relation to death, grief and mourning. As the year went on it became less about being in relation to death, and about reflecting the point I’m at within my grief. The transformation from one stage to another became prominent within my concept, but also my physical practice. I began to explore the transition through material by cutting and folding. As the work progressed it explored the feeling of distress and being trapped. I’ve always been interested in space/place/non-places in relation to the coffin; therefore I wanted to explore this during my time on the course. I intend to work with this subject matter after life on the MA.
