Pulvis et umbra sumus: We are but dust and shadow (Horace, The Odes of Horace)

The MA provided Izzy with the opportunity to engage with the Victorian terrace house her family renovated over an 18-month period; it allowed her to respond on site to the space she was to call ‘home.’ What she realised, through constant move and change, is that the household is never a complete entity but rather a continuing process, involving stages and phases; a push and pull of new versus old that maintains the liminality of the space and process as traces and fragments of each stage compete.

Izzy documented the transformation from commercial offices to family home with drawings and etchings of found abstract patterns. Through forensic-esque exploration of the space around her, she concentrated on the traces left behind from past occupants, as forgotten objects and remnants became the focus of her work. Through drawings of transient shadow-shapes and dust, Izzy’s own belongings seamlessly filled the space, the past and the present merging. The passage of time inevitably became a central motif.
