Having to live in someone else’s shadow is one of the risks of a human being. The pursuit of designing an effective and user-friendly space can be achieved by a functional design. The idea behind it is to design a building that shall be shaped on the basis of its intended form follows function.

My MA practice focuses on how the shadow casted by the tall buildings affects the surrounding small building, by obstructing the natural light. Buildings need to be designed with great consideration to their surroundings. But as of now, Manchester City Council has approved many more skyscrapers to bring about the development in the city. While such block buildings cast permanent shadow on the streets below, it can also affect occupants who suffer from a lack of daylight. Providing natural light into these dark spaces or building in terms of spatial design is a challenging task for designers.

The chosen site is situated diagonally opposite to Beetham tower – Manchester. The design proposal focuses on ways which help reflect the right amount of light into interior spaces interminably, efficiently and endlessly throughout the year. As well as improving the quality of our urban environment by finding solution for having the tall buildings without losing natural light on the areas below.
