Stina Puotinen

MFA Collaborative Practice

Stina Puotinen is an artist, educator and occasional curator from New York City. Her work explores questions of communication & relationships, the (mis)interpretation of objects, actions of spontaneous collaboration and the creation of social space through sculpture, installation and sometimes performance.

Her work on view as part of the MA exhibition is a new iteration of an installation and photo series Curio Curia, most recently on view at Castlefield Gallery 1-10th September 2017. The original installation was made in collaboration with Marie Jones, aka Kochi Kochi; focusing on where their individual practices connected through object and image making, and allowing this collaborative process to be accessible to the public as the work evolved in the space over that week. Puotinen and Jones combined their collective experience manipulating found objects and often food to create sculptural elements that play with distortion of scale, material, veracity and humour. Elements of the work were added to, elaborated upon, moved and removed every day over the course of the original exhibition.

The installation on view as part of the MA exhibition focuses on the work made and documented by Puotinen in particular, including new images not on view in the original installation.
