MA Design: Graphic Design and Art Direction

I am a graphic designer and visual artist. My interest is driven by my identity, the culture and the environment of where I grew up in Japan. The primary focus point of my work is understanding the relationship between nature and human behaviour.

During this MA, I explored my interest towards the conflict of the natural environment through an urban and industrial surrounding. Using the images of natural patterns, such as clouds and water, surfaces which I found throughout the city of Manchester; these graphical patterns were applied to the captured images and filmic works. While incorporating the aesthetic of Japanese Zen philosophy, my intents are to use the notion of “transition” and “impermanence” for my work.

Currently, we are consumed by time and lots of information without any awareness. What if we slow dawn our pace and constrict the amount of information that be absorbed?

I often explore a minimalistic approach for my visual practice. My work creates a dialogue with the intercepting crowd because of my use of simplicity.

“What we see gets simpler, and what we can bring to it gets more complex.”
