Professor Tim Brennan joins Arkin University of Creative Arts & Design as Visiting Professor

11 February 2020

New role will further support the partnership between the two creative institutions

Professor Tim Brennan, Head of the Department of Art at Manchester School of Art, is to join Arkin University of Creative Arts & Design (ARUCAD) in Northern Cyprus as a Visiting Professor.

Brennan’s new appointment will build on the ongoing partnership that Manchester School of Art and ARUCAD has established through teaching and Gulsen Bal’s role as Visiting Research Fellow at Manchester School of Art, as well as a new double-degree partnership programme.

This new partnership programme means students who successfully complete three years at ARUCAD can complete their final year of study at Manchester School of Art and receive a degree from both institutions. The programme allows students to experiment with a broad and expansive approach to art, developing their creative skills and knowledge for their chosen career.

As Visiting Professor, Brennan will regularly visit ARUCAD to present talks and masterclasses as well as delivering workshops to students and the creative communities in Cyprus.

I’m very much looking forward to contributing to their dynamic and rapid development as the leading art and design university within Cyprus and to their growing importance both in Turkey and internationally.

Brennan is a contemporary artist, poet and historian who previously worked as Director of MA Curating at Goldsmiths, Associate Dean at the University of Sunderland and Professor of Art/Director of Pre-Doctoral Studies at the College of Creative Arts, Massey University, New Zealand.

He has exhibited internationally over the past 30 years including the 50th and 54th Venice Biennales, Interzone Performance Biennale in Quebec Canada and AV Festival in Newcastle. He has published extensively, contributing to over 15 monograph publications, multiple academic journals and in 2007 he was shortlisted for the UK's Northern Arts Prize.

Brennan said: “I’m delighted to have been invited to be Visiting Professor by ARUCAD. I’m very much looking forward to contributing to their dynamic and rapid development as the leading art and design university within Cyprus and to their growing importance both in Turkey and internationally. This will also really benefit our own teaching, learning and research here at Manchester Metropolitan University through our existing partnership.”

Assc Prof, Dr. Gulsen Bal, Visiting Research Fellow said: “It’s a great honour to have Professor Tim Brennan join the Faculty of Arts at ARUCAD as Visiting Professor. ARUCAD is delighted with this new appointment because Brennan has had such a variety of inspiring professional experience, not only as an academic but most importantly as an independent artist using cross disciplinary approaches in the midst of discursive engagements.

“This appointment further consolidates our new double-degree partnership programme between ARUCAD and Manchester School of Art with both parties looking forward to new creative collaborations between our two institutions.”
