Study puts MMU in top 20
TEACHING standards at MMU are among the highest in the country, according to a new appraisal of UK lecturing standards.
Teaching quality inspections put Manchester Metropolitan in the top 20 in the UK, according to a new "unbiased" way of looking at government data.
The findings which cover more than 1,000 inspection results published by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) appear in the academic journal Quality in Higher Education.
Inspections of 83 English universities between 1995-2001 were analysed and ordered by Robert Raeside, director of research at Napier University.
MMU's rapid rise
The new table sees MMU promoted from 45th in the table, and argues that previous methods of compiling league table of teaching quality were "skewed" in favour of richer institutions.
MMU had scored highly in QAA inspections, notably in business and management, philosophy and politics, art and design, biology, environmental science, material science, psychology, education and English – yet this had not translated into a high league table position.
Earlier this month a report in the Guardian stated that MMU offered students more ‘contact time’ with lecturers and closer personal supervision than other leading universities.
