Student wins clothing award in China

Young designer praises MMU support

WORK by a young Manchester fashion designer has been voted the "most commercially interesting" at one of Asia’s leading catwalk shows.

Designs by Moran Dehan, a third-year student on the Fashion Design and Technology course, was voted the top European designer at the Jeans West Fashion Competition in Beijing, China.

Her ‘Cherry Blossom’ collection won the Best Commercial Potential Award and put Moran third overall in a field dominated by designers from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The 23-year-old was accompanied to the grand final by Professor Richard Murray, Dean of Faculty and Cath Fairhurst, head of MMU’s internationally-renowned Department of Clothing Design Technology.

Fun to wear

Judges at Jeanswest, which was covered by the major TV channels in China and held in front of a 10,000 audience, praised the student’s "fun to wear" collection, saying the colours and patterns mixed fantastically well and the work impressive both technically and by design.

Moran, who is currently on her third-year placement with Hothouse in Whalley Bridge, said: "It was an amazing experience and an honour to take part in something as big as this.

"I have been invited to return to Beijing and take part in a design programme for national television.

And she added: "I couldn’t have done it without the MMU lecturers and technicians!"
