MMU Football Academy

BUDDING Beckhams and Bartons are being invited to take part in football trials and coaching sessions at MMU Cheshire today, May 29.

The football academy, part of the ‘world class’ sport science base at MMU, is running an Open Day at the Alsager campus, with trials open to boys aged 16 to 18, and of good footballing ability and GCSEs.

Entrants combine football coaching with a BTEC qualification which opens the door to University.

All second-years who completed the BTEC in Sports Performance have applied to university, with four of them applying to MMU.

More recruits

Melvin Wilkes, head coach, said: "The academy is going from strength to strength with a total of 75 new recruits for 2007-2008."

This year the MMU Academy team won the Academy Premier League from colleges across the Midlands.

Academy Open Day consists of a tour of the university's facilities, structured professional football coaching and a series of trial games.
