Clinton Cahill's commercial background in illustration and has lectured in art and design since 1982. He has taught courses in Further and Higher Education institutions in the Northwest and overseas. His first degree is in Fine Art, painting (exhibiting as a Whitworth Northern Young Contemporaries in 1980) and he holds an MA the History of Art and Design. Currently a full time Senior Lecturer in the Department of Design at Manchester School of Art, he is a tutor on BA (Hons) Graphic Design course and co-ordinating subject tutor for taught MA Graphic Design and Art Direction, MA Illustration and MA Animation, as part of the MMU taught postgraduate network. Clinton is pursuing his interests in the phenomenology of image and the relationship between image, text and illustration, by undertaking a part time practice-based PhD study into visuality in James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, exploring visual adaptation of the text and processes of reading-through-drawing. This is also an expression of his interest in advancing the practice-as-research agenda of the School of Art through the development of dialogue, opportunity and resources. He writes a monthly guest blog for the James Joyce Centre in Dublin and has presented papers on his research in the UK and internationally.
Clinton served as External Examiner for MA Applied Arts at the University Wolverhampton, 2008 - 2012 and for Communications Art and Design, University of Huddersfield, 2009 - 14.
Clinton is currently supervising six PhD candidates.
