David Grimshaw

MA/MSc Production Design, MA Design Network and Three Dimensional Design

David Grimshaw

David Grimshaw is Programme Leader for MA/MSc Product Design at Manchester School of Art, a Pathway Leader for the Postgraduate Design Network, and was previously programme leader for BA(Hons) 3-Dimensional Design, the course he graduated from in 1989.

Basing himself in Manchester, David established a successful career as a freelance design consultant, developing products for the contract furniture market, and designing ranges for top end UK manufactures such as Viaduct, Allermuir and Davison Highley. He was heavily involved in supporting emerging design talent from the north west, working with The Liverpool & Manchester Design Initiative to curate and design stands to promote the of work of Northwest designers and makers, at national and international design shows and fairs.

David returned to Manchester School of Art in 1997 to teach, whilst continuing to practice as a design consultant. However, more recently his design focus has turned to research, informed by his professional practice as a material led designer for manufacture, and his teaching across craft and production design programmes. He is currently investigating the relationship of digital design & manufacturing, with the materials and processes of craft making, and has been invited to present his research at conferences both nationally and internationally.

David brings over 25 years of practice and teaching knowledge within design, craft, manufacturing and making, to inform the current debate on the sustainability and development of contemporary craft practice, in a world that appears increasingly convinced that the future is digital.

In addition to his work at Manchester School of Art, David is currently external examiner for BA(Hons)3D-Design at Northumbria University, and has previously been external examiner and academic reviewer at Loughborough University, York St. John University, and NAFA Singapore.
