Gemma graduated in 2004 with a BA (Hons) in Fashion Studies, Photography and Video Production from Lincoln University.
Later that year she joined MDA:Creative, an advertising and marketing agency, based in Manchester, as an Assistant Photographer. Over the next 2 years she developed her photographic skills shooting a wide range of subjects from fashion and still life to documentary and architectural environments, working in a fully digital photographic studio and on various locations shoots. During this time she worked with 35mm, medium and large format cameras using digital capture with both studio and location lighting. Working within a demanding environment with a variety of creative individuals allowed her to develop her knowledge of the industry and expand her skills in regard to digital retouching.
Gemma joined the Manchester School of Art in 2006 and felt that her knowledge and experience would be a valuable asset to the institution. She started off as a Technician in the Audio Visual Store, before progressing to Assistant Technical Officer in the Audio Visual/Photographic area. She currently works in the Photographic area, based in the Chatham building, advising both staff and students on the use of Photographic equipment and technical aspects of all the Photography workshops.
Gemma also runs her own commercial photographic practice specialising in product, interior/exterior and landscape photography for a wide range of clients.
