Ian began his working life as a baker but wanted to pursue his lifelong passion in film making and photography, which he had from a very early age.

After 6 years hard study in the fields of Electronics, Television Production, Graphics, Photography and Media Production, Ian joined a long established photographic supplier based in Manchester. Wanting to expand its business into video, AV sales and hire markets, Ian was employed as the Professional Video Hire Manager to develop this aspect of the business. During his time there, Ian was also involved in installation of AV equipment. This he would find useful later in his career.

A career move, saw Ian managing a Broadcast Hire department at a Cheshire-based broadcast business. This, together with family commitments, warranted moving his family home nearer his place of work. It was at this time he would occasionally freelance for Film and Television productions. This was the catalyst for him to wanting to work freelance on a permanent basis.

With the arrival of his son Ian required a more reliable source of income and in May 2003, he successfully applied for the position of an AV Technician at MMU, joining the then "Media Services" on a one year contract. Ian helped design and and build 'technical desks' for installations in the University's lecture theatres and classrooms, a legacy which still stands today. After six months, Ian was appointed to a permanent Role in Media Services and continued to service and maintain the AV equipment in the newly built Law School (Sandra Burslem building).

In 2008 an internal restructure within MMU moved him into IT Services. Although his interest in computers and programming had been with him since the early 80's, a family matter made him realise his passion was AV and Video Production and in December of 2013 Ian successfully applied for the post of Technical Officer, within Technical Services, supporting staff and students in the newly named, Manchester School of Art.
