Martin is a fully qualified Carpenter and Joiner with an ONC and Technician Four Certificate in Building. He received an Apprentice of the Year Award during his four year Apprenticeship, has worked in every single aspect of joinery; including bench work to house building, shop fitting and formwork with a preference for the finishing and high class joinery aspects of the trade. He has been an Assistant Manager of a large Stone Masons and then a sub contractor for a further four years.
Martin took up his position as Gallery Technician in 1987 at the then named Manchester Polytechnic. He has seen many changes along the way right up to the now positive and forward looking Manchester Metropolitan University.
In his spare time he is a passionate, award winning, self taught, traditional and digital artist who exhibits not only annually in London, but all over the UK. In 2000 he had an Exhibition in New York.
His work has been published in The Flight Journal, Aviation History, Astronomy Now, various Cat Magazines, PDSA magazine, several Calendars and a book on Pyramids published by the British Museum.
Every year Martin gives some of his Paintings away to be auctioned to help raise money for Manchester Christie's Hospital and a Manchester Children's Hospital.
Martin finds his knowledge, experience and skills very useful to him in his current role, especially when preparing for Exhibitions in the Gallery. His contacts with Galleries in London and the experience he gained getting his work published, have proved a valuable source of up to date information which he passes on to the students and staff who attend his Framing and Presentation Workshops and Inductions.
Working within the Gallery and Faculty of Art and Design is a great experience for Martin as he gets to meet the amazing students and Exhibitors from all over the world.
