A modern cinema great and decorated film editor will take to the stage for a special event with a Manchester Met film researcher.

Thelma Schoonmaker, a defining figure of modern global cinema and editor for Martin Scorsese since 1980, will take to the stage with Dr Andrew Moor for an ‘in conversation with’ evening.

The celebrated US film editor - who has Oscar wins for Raging Bull, The Aviator and The Departed, eight Oscar nominations, and a BAFTA fellowship - will chat to Dr Moor at HOME on 5 November about her career and the work of her late husband, British filmmaker Michael Powell.

Dr Moor, Reader in Cinema History and co-lead of the University’s Screen Studies Network, is one of the global authorities on Britain’s most eminent filmmakers, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, who worked together from 1939 to the late 1950s, often known as ‘The Archers’.

Among their most famous films are A Matter of Life and Death, Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes.

He will be chatting to Schoonmaker about her late husband Michael Powell’s partnership with Pressburger and Powell’s friendship with Schoonmaker’s own collaborator Martin Scorsese.

The pair will also be discussing Schoonmaker’s illustrious film editing and producing career which spans six decades.

Dr Moor said: “It’s an absolute honour to be speaking with Thelma, who’s arguably the world’s most famous and talented film editor, as well as being an all-round lovely person.

“Through her close partnership with Scorsese, she’s a brilliant ambassador for the work of Pressburger and her late husband Powell. Together, they’re major figures in 20th and 21st cinema, and I can’t wait to ask her about their legendary work.”

The event is part of Cinema Unbound: The Creative Worlds of Powell and Pressburger, a UK-wide film season of which Dr Moor is the official co-curator at HOME.

Dr Moor will host a series of post-screening conversations with experts on Powell and Pressburger at HOME. The season started on 21 October and will continue until mid-December.

In addition, this autumn Dr Moor will be taking part in a panel discussion on ‘Queering the Archers’ at the BFI Southbank, and speaking at Sheffield’s Showroom Cinema, Bradford’s National Science and Media Museum and The Cottage Road Cinema in Leeds.
