Kevin Cummins receives honorary degree

20 July 2015

Photographer honoured for "outstanding achievements"

RENOWNED photographer Kevin Cummins today received his honorary degree from Manchester Metropolitan University.

Kevin received the title of honorary Doctor of Arts from Manchester School of Art in recognition of his outstanding achievements and position as an inspiration to the University’s students and graduates.

Kevin began to photograph rock bands in the mid-1970s in Manchester and is now lauded internationally for his work. He had a 25-year association with NME magazine including 10 years as their chief photographer, was instrumental in establishing City Life magazine and was a founding contributor to The Face magazine.

Speaking to the graduating students, he told those who might want to follow in his footsteps that while digital photography “has opened up a whole new world… you still have to be dedicated to make sure you get the work you want.”

Self-belief

Kevin said that after graduating “relatively unscathed, just as punk rock reared its ugly head” he found he had “the most important attribute that you take into the world – self-belief.”

He added that while the graduates’ possibilities were endless, he hoped that many of them would stay in Manchester “and continue building the city into even more of a creative hub.”

An exhibition of Kevin’s iconic images will run at the Lowry Hotel until August 4, with portraits including Joy Division, The Smiths and David Bowie.

Also receiving an honorary degree today will be Dr Barbara Murray, who will receive an honorary Doctor of Health award from the Faculty of Health, Psychology and Social Care in recognition of her significant contribution to healthcare in the region.

Manchester Metropolitan’s graduation ceremonies continue at the Bridgewater Hall until next Monday. People receiving their honorary degrees later this week include Brian Cookson OBE and Sir Richard Leese.
