Illustration with Animation students impress at New Designers

Internships, commissions and collaborations offered to event exhibitors

BA (Hons) Illustration with Animation students attended New Designers Part 2 in July 2017, with a staff-curated group of students showcasing work at this annual graduate showcase. 

Over the course of the four day event, the stand attracted a diverse range of visiotrs from the design industry, academia and the general public. 

Students were offered potential opportunities from commissions, internships, and collaborations during the show attracting the interest of leading artists' agents, picture book publishers and lifestyle retailers. 

Joshua Harrison's literary college portfolio attracted interest from high street brands like Next and River Island, offering to commission work for fashion branding and provide paid internships. 

Jamie McDougall, Jana Olehno and Kate Hudson were of interest to John Lewis and Sainsbury's Homeware, in terms of packaging, point of sale and in store promotion development.

Likewise, Lottie Harrison attracted interest from the Royal Society of Arts and the Design Council for her evolving book and film worke exploring the impact of dementia. 

Following his exhibition at Manchester Metropolitan's Mancunia Salon event at Manchester Internationa Festival's Glasshouse, paper and model maker Dean Smith found his work had come to the attention of the National Film and Television School and others looking to commission and collaboratie on future work. 

Additionally, Annette Jones was 'Spotted' by the One Year On show curators, and invited to apply for a space in the show in 2018, while Eva Akesson had her stop motion animated film 'Black Shuck' shortlisted for the New Designers Screening Prize. Eva also attending an arranged studio visit and portfolio review at Moth Animation Studios in Islington with Senior Lecturer Eleanor Mulhearn

A number of students where also approached for portfolio reviews and internship opportunities with Hallmark Cards, and there were a wide range of further contacts and opportunities for students across week. 

However, it wasn't only graduating students making contacts and New Designers. Alumni David Howe, who graduating from Illustration with Animation in 2016, was selected for the prestigious One Year On Designers' showcase. David received business support and mentoring in advance of the event and used his stand to showcase recent work for the Folio Society, attracting the attention of No Brow/Flying Eye, leading picture book specialists and artist's agent Illustration Limited.
