Adam Murray

Senior Lecturer
Fashion Art Direction

Adam Murray is an lecturer, photographer and curator whose practice and research is rooted in photography and the fashion image. He is co-founder of photography collective Preston is my Paris, with work held in the Tate Library, featured in The Photobook: A History Vol 3 and exhibited internationally. Murray has collaborated with SHOWstudio and lectured at the V&A, Tate Britain, The Photographers' Gallery and Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

Most recently he co-curated North: Identity, Photography, Fashion with Lou Stoppard at Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool. The exhibition explores the way the North of England is depicted, constructed and celebrated in selected photographs, artworks and fashion collections.  The show brings together collective visions of the North, unpicking themes that regularly appear in design and media. It then toured to Somerset House, London with the title North: Fashioning Identity.

‘The skill will be in learning to look beneath the clichés and habits of imagination that lie at the heart of these myths.’ Motivated by questioning existing depictions of the North of England in fashion imagery, SHOWstudio editor Lou Stoppard and Manchester-based academic Adam Murray unite to unpick Northern identity, the effect of geographic space on creative output and the importance of place.
