Bristol's Harbourside gets striking new art installation

A striking new piece of public art has been unveiled on the Harbourside.
The finishing touches have now been put in place on the new installation by artist Karsten Huneck at Wapping Wharf.
The eye-catching structure is located towards the bottom of Gaol Ferry Steps, the new pedestrian route that runs through the new community.

Made from weathered steel, intricately cut and illuminated with energy-efficient LED lighting, the artwork is the first in a series of permanent commissions by Ginkgo for the Wapping Wharf development.

Karsten Huneck said: "We wanted to create an artwork that was integrated into the architecture of the site.

"The entrance and staircase help to create a new public space and the exposed column in the space reminded us of an old Victorian theatre.

"This inspired us to create an intricate ceiling using a traditional Victorian pattern which is lit from above with LED lighting to create a stunning, illuminated piece."

Stuart Hatton, director at Umberslade, the developer behind Wapping Wharf, said: "I'm thrilled to see the new artwork now unveiled. It's a striking visual piece that gives the new Wapping Wharf development a sense of individuality and a creative vibe."

Karsten worked with local steel company Resurgem to fabricate and install the artwork.
