Collecting Dead Frenchmen

Public Lecture by Dr Steven Gartside

5pm—6pm

Jean Baudrillard commented on the importance of drawing a distinction between the concept of collecting and the concept of accumulation. The talk gathers together an awkward collection of (mostly) French writers to consider the underlying need or compulsion to collect. The subject matter will move from the motivations of the private collector to those of the museum.

Steven Gartside is curator of the Holden Gallery and Research Fellow at Manchester School of Art.
