Fear of F***ing Up Exhibition

Celebrating Mistakes / Taking Ownership of Failures

Textiles in Practice (TIP) students have established the Underground University. This unofficial movement promotes the development of our community of practice. During its inception it was discovered that we have a lot in common with other courses and that we should extend membership beyond just TIP students.

It is well documented that for innovation to place individuals are required to take risks and to look beyond past ways of doing things. As art school students we try to go beyond the obvious, to work outside of the box and to continually challenge our individual identities as artists and designers. However, this way of doing things presents one common obstacle, something that can and does regularly threaten our risky and creative approach – this to us is known as the Fear of F***ing Up (FoFU).

As a body, the Underground University students have decided to make a stand against this fear by hosting an exhibition.

FoFU is an exhibition that brings together creatives from across all year groups and disciplines within Manchester School of Art to celebrate our mistakes and take ownership of our failures. We believe that by exhibiting what we each consider to be our ‘worst’ work we can work towards establishing a community of supportive and courageous individual creatives who are bold enough to learn from our mistakes and celebrate the things that make us so unique. By showcasing the submitted ‘failures’ in the School of Art Vertical Gallery we boldly embrace our fears and reject the notion of ‘playing it safe’.

The exhibition is taking place in the Manchester School of Art ground floor Vertical Gallery 15th – 19th May 2017. In support of this uprising we have invited Manchester based band Queasy who will be playing live 6pm.

The Preview night on the 15th May will be open to all creatives within and outside the School of Art. Please come along to celebrate our stand against FoFU.
