The Performance Research Group at Manchester School of Art Research Centre is proud to host a conference and sharing event ‘Performing Scores / Scoring Performance’, at HOME in Manchester on 11-12 July 2023. The conference seeks to interrogate the concepts and uses of scores in performance and performance studies, as both starting points and modes of documentation, and to bring this area of thinking and practice into productive dialogue. The concept of the score has become a key organising principle in the work of many performance makers in both the postdramatic and live art traditions. It gestures towards the script, and links performance practices to those of less narrative media such as music, visual art, and choreography. It can offer a stimulus, structure, or framework for the making of work, and may become the key trace of a performance after its moment has passed, serving as an artefact that resists the ephemerality of performance in the historical landscape.

10 speakers present short papers, provocations, roundtable discussions, exhibitions of performance scores, and the performing of scores. The event will be started with a keynote presentation by Tanya Beyeler (El Conde de Torrefiel). El Conde de Torrefiel is a Barcelona-based project headed by Tanya Beyeler (b. 1980, Switzerland) and Pablo Gisbert (b. 1982, Spain), whose works are the result of an oscillation between literature, visual arts and choreography, that aims to transcend the parameters of verbal language. Having studied theatre and philosophy, Beyeler and Gisbert are also interested in music and contemporary dance. El Conde de Torrefiel are currently working on a new commission for Factory International.

There are limited spaces available for both days of the conference booked on a first come first served basis. Please note the ticket involves attendance at all presentations and catering at HOME. Please book tickets below.
