World leading research in Art and Design

Miriad is ranked 5th

WORLD-class research scores have confirmed MMU as one of the best universities in the UK for Art and Design.

The Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art & Design has areas of ‘world leading’ scholarship, according to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise – the major review of research at UK universities.

Overall, 80% of activity in research is ‘internationally recognised’ with a tenth of work deemed ‘world leading’.

Moreover, MMU has more internationally acclaimed researchers than any centre in the UK, apart from Glasgow, Brighton and the University of the Arts.

Tradition

Professor John Hyatt, Director of Miriad, said: “We are trying to benchmark ourselves against the best in the world. That is the Manchester tradition.

“We have given researchers freedom to express themselves and be innovative, and that has helped us to be successful.”

By encouraging young researchers and being inclusive, MMU is now ranked 5th in the UK for research strength in depth.

“That is good news for staff and for students, as our teaching and courses are closely linked to research and innovation,” added Professor Hyatt.

Vice-Chancellor Professor John Brooks described the research assessment of MMU as “an excellent outcome”.
