Joe Trickett
Lecturer
Interior Design
Joe is a designer, researcher and educator. He is a Senior Lecturer, leading the Second Year (Level 5) on the BA(Hons) Interior Design at Manchester School of Art and Design, MMU. He formerly held academic roles at INTO University Partnerships, Southampton Solent, and York St John's University, with guest lecturer collaborations at British University of Egypt and New York School of Interior Design. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and was a judge for the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) student design awards in 2024. He is an active member of Interior Educators (IE) and Architects for Climate Action Network (ACAN).
As an established commercial Interior Designer, Joe designed for several award-winning practices, working with global brands such as Asics, Radley, Heineken, Manchester City FC, Chelsea FC and P&O Ferries. These were paired with domestic educational projects and a range of hospitality clients to give him a diverse portfolio. Joe continues to work with commercial clients on a freelance basis.
Joe’s research took seed during his time gaining a Permaculture Design Certificate at Wa Samaki Ecosystems, Trinidad in 2016. This continued into his MA Interiors thesis at MMU (2023). He was selected to participate in the Architectural Association’s Design + Make Summer camp at their woodland campus, Hooke Park (2024), following which he exhibited research on Localisation (Interior Educators Conference, 2024) and co-authored a chapter titled Harvest Mapping with Graeme Brooker and Patrick Quinn (Royal College of Arts). His current research focusses on rethinking material processes through making and practice.
