Mary Edmonia Lewis was the first Black and Indigenous person to achieve international recognition and acclaim for her work as a sculptor in the 19th century. Mount Stuart holds one of only two works by Lewis in public collections in the UK, and her only work in Scotland. To celebrate the permanent display of Edmonia Lewis' Bust of Christ at Mount Stuart in 2021, a roundtable discussion on the life and work of Lewis, her refusal to conform and her relationship to Bute. The roundtable was introduced by curator Jessica Insley, chaired by Prof Lisa Farrington, with speakers Dr Charmaine A Nelson, Prof Kirsten Pai Buick and Prof Susannah Thompson. It included a screening of a short film with contributions by Jessica Insley and Susannah Thompson
