This chapter discusses architectural models in the context of the B.15 model making workshop at Manchester School of Architecture. Architectural models have long been an essential tool for the design of buildings and the communication of these propositions to clients and building users. The chapter gives a theoretical overview of the significance of architectural models before detailing their use in the teaching of architecture. This presents a series of concepts such as scale and materials, how these are reproduced in miniature, and the various roles models can take in developing designs, resolving issues, and considering options. Physical architectural models are presented as integral to architectural design, overcoming the visual bias present in other modes such as drawing.
