Over the last generation the focus on the reuse of existing buildings within the practice and theory of interior design has led to a situation in which the term 'interior' does not simply indicate a category of space, i.e. the inside of a building, but it is also a conceptual term that denotes a specific approach in which historical buildings are considered as a palimpsest rather than as a monument. This chapter discusses how students at three different universities (Hasselt University, Belgium; Manchester School of Architecture, UK; and Rhode Island School of Design, USA) are individually encouraged to explore and further the rich potential of the existing site through a design education that is informed by reuse-specific research and theory, and from this comparative investigation, draw conclusions on an educational approach towards a theory of interior education for adaptive reuse.
