COMFORT BEYOND LIMITS: Precedents for Creativity

Output Type:Chapter in a book
Publication:Pedagogy as Creative Practice in Architecture Inspiration and Resistance During Change
Pagination:pp. 46-62

This chapter critically examines the role of precedent studies in architectural education, arguing that traditional building-focused precedents perpetuate limits on the architects' ability to forge new roles in society that better address societal challenges. By erasing social, political and economic contexts, we argue that traditional precedent studies reinforce habitual architectural practices that systematically marginalise diverse perspectives and identities, particularly affecting students from under-represented backgrounds. Drawing on critical pedagogy theory and examples from the 'And Architecture'atelier at Manchester School of Architecture, this chapter explores how process-driven artistic precedents can be used to disrupt students' ingrained professional norms. Through illustrated case studies of three students, we demonstrate how researching and applying a range of methods from performance, installation, collage and video-based artists can be used to challenge students' methodological conformity, imagine new ways of practising architecture, and support students to explore their personal identities and experiences within their work. This chapter reveals how students initially struggled against architectural norms and professional expectations, before ultimately developing more inclusive, critically engaged practices. We argue that this shift is vital if future architects are to engage with the messy, emergent and non-linear processes needed to address complex societal challenges.
