This written response to the UK Government Open Consultation on the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage has been prepared by Dr Johnathan Djabarouti ARB IHBC FHEA FIPM, Architect, Conservation and Place Professional, and Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the Manchester School of Architecture, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. Dr Djabarouti is an expert in intangible heritage with specific expertise concerning its relationship to historic places and physical fabric. He is currently seconded to Historic England on an AHRC Innovation Scholars Secondment to assist the organisation specifically with the understanding
of intangible heritage and its relationship to historic places. He is the author of the book Critical Built Heritage Practice and Conservation: Evolving Perspectives (Routledge, 2024) which assess the impact of intangible understandings of heritage on the broader built heritage
industry in the UK. This response focuses primarily on the 'Definition', 'Inventory Criteria', 'Community Permission', and 'Categories' of the consultation. It also offers further evidence to support themes relating to place-specific ICH, UNESCO and the UK, and the tangible-intangible relationship.
