NOTE FROM THE EDITORS

This concluding note takes stock of an edited collection produced under conditions of escalating instability in UK higher education. It situates the book's accounts of creative, socially and environmentally conscious architectural pedagogy against a sector-wide crisis marked by structural financial pressures, job losses, programme closures and changes to professional accreditation. Within this landscape, this chapter argues, architectural education, particularly the design studio, feels the strain acutely due to its time-, space- and pastoral care-intensive character. This chapter foregrounds the editorial labour that made the collection possible: maintaining a clear research focus, shaping a coherent narrative thread, and treating mentorship as a form of scholarship. Read this way, this book becomes evidence of pedagogy as practice under pressure: dialogic, care-led and inventive, but also explicitly resistant to the reduction of higher education into compliance and metrics driven mediocrity.
