This paper looks at the issues surrounding the development and design of a system of notation, in this case the design of a notation for the senses. This activity raises several important issues about how we represent our perceptions and how we employ such perceptions in the design process. Notational and inscriptive practices are often regarded as wholly natural and neutral frameworks within which ideas may be expressed. This is far from being the case, and the form of a representation colours the mode of thought taken in developing the ideas to a greater or lesser degree. © 2009 Taylor & Francis.
