A decade of experimentation in suburban expansions followed the demonstration of Ebenezer Howard's first Garden City at Letchworth. British Architects began to plan suburban layouts along Garden City lines to control development and relieve city overcrowding. This article establishes the origins of an unrealised scheme for an urban expansion at Withington, Manchester, drawn by Edgar Wood during his partnership with James Henry Sellers, for the Manchester Society of Architects. By referring to further suburban design schemes by Wood, research findings extend knowledge of his projects beyond architecture and furniture. Focusing on Manchester, this article traces the city's experimental town planning prior to the First World War and, by selecting a northern provincial city as its setting, it offers an alternative narrative about Howard's influence outside of London. Wider local professional networks are identified including the Northern Art Workers Guild and the Garden City Association's Manchester Branch to trace interactions between Thomas Wootton Greenwood, Raymond Unwin, Barry Parker, Ebenezer Howard, Hasley Ricardo, Edwin Lutyens and Thomas Adams.
