Symbiosis
BA Textiles in Practice
What can we learn from ‘symbiosis’ in nature, and how can we make connections to society, community and our environment from this?
Students have been asked to design towards a ‘context’. They have been asked to choose between ‘place & space’ or ’new material thinking’. Using research, development and sampling they will design a textile output that explores the idea of ‘symbiosis’.
In this module students will be working with the sustainable British clothing brand Community Clothing. Students will be invited to use their imagination and creative thinking to reinvent it, using their response to the brief and your take on how ‘symbiosis’ might underpin their research. The notion of purpose will allow them to re-think materiality and place more conscious choices at the centre of their design process.
Students will embark on a new kind of ‘textile’ adventure, they will leave the studio and head to the brand-new Super Labs at MMU Science & Engineering to undertake observation and investigation using dissection microscopes looking at raw fibres and raw materials used to produce textiles. We have also partnered with Material Source where we will have a tour of their new Future Materials Library, we will be joined by lead Creative and alumni of the Textiles course Emily Bagshaw.
