1b. The House of Opposites: 2020/1

Images from the first InsideOutsideHouse exhibition, entitled, The House of Opposites. The work draws inspiration from artist Leonora Carrington’s painting, The House Opposite (1945), and from collective memories of childhood and the childhood dollhouse. It was specifically designed as an installation for the Bookshelf Gallery at Dean Clough Gallery. The work consisted of around 75 miniature figures, together with projection and sound.

Feedback quote: “I wanted to tell you, Alison, Alice and Jenna how struck I was by ‘The House of Opposites’. The world you’ve created has really caught the intangibility of (some of my actual) dreams. It’s filled with surreal disturbance, anxiety, death AND delightful warm moments of respite in colour and familiarity. zooming in and out of unease. Wonderfully detailed. Thanks, Steve.”

The InsideOutsideHouse is a collaborative project, including artists: Eleanor Mulhearn, Alice kettle, Alison Duddle and writer and curator, Jenna C. Ashton
