Notes for a Performance - (Re) Visioning a Smoky Meeting

‘Notes for a Performance – (Re) visioning a Smoky Meeting’ was a four-month artist residency at the Tetley Centre for Contemporary Art in Leeds. Working with the Tetley’s industrial archive (located in-house and at West Yorkshire Archives, Leeds) the residency was concerned with imagining the past and how cinematic language informs our understanding of it.

The aim of the residency was to develop performative works concerned with unknown and unverified histories identified in the archive, focusing on the Tetley building and its business history in conjunction with the (newer) cultural institution.

The residency resulted in an exhibition, performance and film work. Accompanying this the Tetley, University of Leeds and Wild Pansy Press published a catalogue of the residency period. The publication is a compendium of research material from the Tetley’s archive alongside the performance script, performance documentation and selected photographic works from the archive. The publication also included commissioned texts, ‘Winston is for Real’ by artist Pavel Büchler and ‘A Smoky Meeting - an Intervention in a Heritage Site’ by artist Nick Cass.
