"UDKANT: On the Margins"
“UDKANT” Doverodde Denmark May 2012 - August 2012
Udkant: On the margins was the theme for the Doverodde Book Arts Exhibition in Denmark. In investigating the boundaries of art and design, and in developing my exploration of autobiographical and cathartic narratives within my own practice, I aimed to present loss: of both identity and physically in bereavement, through experimenting with text and image.
I utilised performance, creative writing, collage, and photography to produce an artist book “Landlocked”. The book responds to the set theme by questioning how society can marginalise individuals. Individual interpretations of the exhibition theme, and appropriate processes were debated as the work progressed in meetings with “MADE” (an independent artist collective, comprising of staff both past and present from the School of Art, each of whom were proposing work for the exhibition). In analysing and evaluating each other’s work we were able to refine final responses for individual submission. Additionally I examined the work and ideas of Sophie Calle, Tracy Emin, Barbara Kruger to contextualise my methodology and ideas.
The UDKANT Exhibition (May - 5 August 2012) was part the Doverodde Book Arts Festival in Denmark. Artist talks, workshops and events preceded the exhibition opening, a catalogue Issuu was published. Local press featured the event and a piece about the Festival will be featured in the next UWE Newsletter No75. Members of the MADE Collective Sylvia Waltering and Lucy May Schofield delivered a paper at the launch of the exhibition Hilary Judd delivered a workshop and represented the collective at the book arts festival.
Udkant is an international exhibition. Landlocked “conversed” with other works within the Book Arts genre.
