Pop up exhibition project: “Ghosted”
18 August 2026
MA Contemporary Curating student Mina Kyoleyan, awarded the prestigious British Council Venice Fellowship, curated the “Ghosted” exhibition at the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia in Venice...
“Ghosted”is a term that is closely tied to the modern times of digital navigation. It refers to the contemporary term describing the act of being deliberately ignored in online communication, treated as if one is invisible like a ghost. The term speaks directly to the feeling of being a stranger and how you imagine you are perceived in such conditions. Feeling ghosted is mirrored in the experience of moving through familiar environments without fully identifying with them and without feeling seen. This condition is widely shared but rarely addressed. Given that, the exhibition project “Ghosted” aims to draw attention to this overlooked aspect of contemporary life, which is a situation where feeling out of place or even invisible can occur everywhere.

Modern generations move across countries, languages and environments with more ease than any other before it, yet the sense of belonging often remains unsettled. The feeling of being out of place wherever we are can often arise within familiar settings, when a place that once felt certain becomes strangely distant. This experience of becoming a stranger in both new and known environments is at the core of what “Ghosted”seeks to address. Presented as part of a project connected to the British Council Venice Fellowship for the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, the exhibition offers a space where these experiences of broken belonging can be articulated and made visible.
The works gathered in this space come from different voices and take many forms, including video, drawing, reflections, collage and archival material. Each contribution carries its own story, yet together they highlight a shared emotional terrain. The personal appears recognisable and shows the commonality of this experience without setting limits to its context.

This exhibition was realised with the kind support of the on-site co-ordinators of the M+B Studio for the British Council Venice Fellowship at the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.
