Manchester is UK's second 'digital' city

ICT and new media is a dynamic field, and we run Bachelor's and Master's courses specifically designed to meet demand for employment here in Manchester, now Britain's second city for the so-called 'digital industries'.

Oddly, many qualified graduates still leave the city-region to take up posts in London and the South-East when many of the new jobs are right here, up North!

ICT digital and communications employs a staggering 100,000 people in the region, and growth is strong with a predicted 11,000 more jobs being created by 2020.

David Bird, senior lecturer in e-business at MMU, is inviting students to a Professional Development Day at MMUBS' Cafe.Com to encourage more people to consider this exciting sector as a career.

"This is a burgeoning and exciting new industry. Firms like McCann Erickson and Code Computer Love* are winning awards and taking contracts over rivals in London. There are fantastic opportunities for our highly-trained graduates."

One recent graduate, Andrew Mullett, left MMU to set up ManchesterConfidential.com, a news and leisure website, which has taken the city by storm.

The Professional Development Day is aimed at students in Marketing, Enterprise, Digital Marketing, Digital Creative, Graphic Design, Web Development, Hardware/Network Engineering, PR, Business IT and Advertising but those studying other disciplines are also welcome.

The afternoon, on Wednesday, February 27 noon to 3pm, will provide information about:

• opportunities within the sector in the North West
• part-time work openings
• year-long placements
• holiday placements
• graduate opportunities for final-year students
• setting up business in the digital sector in the North West

So why is Manchester 'big' for ICT?

"Well it's where the computer was invented, 60 years ago, and historically Manchester is a very creative city," says David Bird. "There are also three universities all strong in creative and technical disciplines."

The Day is organised by MMU Business School, MMU Careers Service and Manchester Digital.
