JOHN HYATT’S TMESES

The work consisted of nine new words formed from Tmeses, relating to the notion of art as a 'cultural product' of a 'cultural industry'; public art; and civic identity. These were drawn onto the wall, printed from fax paper ink cartridge by hand. (Curated by Bryony Bond, ex-MA Visual Culture student, now organiser of the 'Alchemy' project at Manchester Museum, University of Manchester, involving as artists ex-Art as Environment student and Hyatt tutee, Tony Hall, and Professor Pavel Buchler). The work continues Hyatt's interest in language, developed in the past as novel ('Navigating the Terror', Ellipsis, 2000) and as poetry and song. His artworks regularly contain language and language games. This interest in language was to lead to Hyatt's interest in genetics, cognitive science and the brain and his research collaborations with the scientists from the NOWGEN Centre, Manchester.
