Postcard portrait of a boy soldier

Postcard portrait of a boy soldier

A 'real photo postcard' of an underage soldier. Following Lord Kitchener's call for volunteer battalions for the British army, many underage soldiers lied about their true age in order to join up for active service overseas. The youngest recorded soldier to serve on the front line, Private Sydney Lewis, was 12 years of age when he enlisted.
